Hackathon: “Solving city problems regarding urban mobility”
Participants: University and high school students from Barcelona (UPC) and Toulouse
Data: 16th (12:00-18:00) and 17th November (9:00-13:00) 2022
Location: Aula Màster, UPC Campus Nord.
There will be 10 teams of around 10 participants each, both from Barcelona and Toulouse. Participants will receive several gifts. The winning team will receive a special gift. Also, we will send a Diploma to each participant as a collaborator with the Project 4I4U.

The Hackathon was a great success. It was wonderful to see so many passionate young people developing their projects so quickly, perfectly organized in their heterogeneous teams made up of engineering students, master students, high school students along with students from a School of Fine Arts. We had 90 participants from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) Toulouse, the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse (ISDAT), the Lycee Polyvalent Joseph Gallieni and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The students were previously organized in 8 teams, with members of the different participating institutions, and they had several proposals from the organizers on how to improve urban mobility issues in cities like Barcelona and Toulouse: Mobility at nigh, mobility and health, micromobility, impact of large events on urban mobility, urban delivery, as some examples. They had a lot of material to design, develop and implement their proposals:
- A kit of board, sensors (accelerometer, ligth, temperature, humidity, sound...) and actuators (LED, buzzer...)
- Air quality sensors
- Material to build the prototypes (boxes, cables, screw, glue, tape...)
- Office supplies (pen, pencil, rubber, post-it, colour pencils, scissors, stapler, markers...)
In just around 10 hours (afternoon 16th and morning 17th Nov 2022), the teams designed their proposal to solve a specific problem related to urban mobility, build a first prototype to demonstrate their idea and prepared their 7-minute pitch showing their project to the audience and the jury.
1. The GIOTTO team proposed a Smart City Center to deal with premature deaths attributable to air pollution from vehicle emissions, through regulation of no. of cars allowed in the center depending on no. of pedestrians and air pollution observed, along with citizen alerts.
2. The Bik'O'llution team proposed a bicycle rental service aware of pollution and traffic jams to suggest quiet and clean routes to customers, to deal with sleep disorders, stress, noise and 1,300 premature deaths/year in Barcelona due to pollution.
3. The PureFlowRoad team presented a prototype pollution sensor and alarm devices installed on the bike to alert cyclists and suggest alternative routes on a city pollution map updated in real time.
4. The Light Trak team proposed a dynamic traffic light regulation based on the traffic, to reduce traffic jam and improve security, to alleviate traffic jam impact: 8 days/life spent in traffic jams and 15% C02 due to traffic jams.
5. The CrowdFree team proposed a tool to avoid crowds in public transport, suggesting alternative means of transport (e.g., location of nearby free bikes, next bus passing soon nearby...) when the metro is too full, and also gives incentives to follow the smart suggestions of their tool.
The Hackathon Jury evaluated the impact of each proposal, the technical and economical feasibilities and the prototype. It was was composed by:

The Hackathon organizers are very proud of all the Teams. From what we have seen here, we are looking forward to seeing the promising proposals throughout their careers to help improve urban mobility in our cities!
After the Hackathon, all participants attended the Tomorrow Mobility Congress kindly invited by the EIT Urban Mobility.
We visited the EIT Urban Mobility booth, where the winner team CrowdFree had a nice conversation with Maria Paula Caycedo, Head of Innovation Hub South of the EIT Urban Mobility.

7. The UM&RA team proposes an urban mobility and risk analysis service to help city councils, by collecting and analyzing data to identify danger zones on roads and propose solutions to promote green urban mobility
8. The Level0 team presents a smart service for cyclists with smart feedback buttons (emergency, fall detection, pollution sensor) on the handle, an app to assess the network and monitor cycling activity, and a web tool to review network problems and analyze data.
The Hackathon Jury evaluated the impact of each proposal, the technical and economical feasibilities and the prototype. It was was composed by:

It was wonderful to see so many passionate young people developing their projects so quickly, perfectly organized in their heterogeneous teams made up of engineering students, master students, high school students along with students from a School of Fine Arts. We had 90 participants from the <strong>Institut National des Sciences Appliquées</strong> (<a href="https://www.insa-toulouse.fr/en/index.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">INSA</a>) Toulouse, the <strong>Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse</strong> (<a href="https://www.isdat.fr/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ISDAT</a>), the <a href="https://joseph-gallieni.mon-ent-occitanie.fr/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Lycee Polyvalent Joseph Gallieni</strong></a> and the <strong>Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya</strong> (<a href="https://www.upc.edu/en?set_language=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UPC</a>).</p><p>The students were previously organized in 8 teams, with members of the different participating institutions, and they had several proposals from the organizers on how to improve urban mobility issues in cities like Barcelona and Toulouse: Mobility at nigh, mobility and health, micromobility, impact of large events on urban mobility, urban delivery, as some examples. They had a lot of material to design, develop and implement their proposals:</p><ul><li>A <a href="https://www.gotronic.fr/art-beginner-kit-grove-110061162-31759.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">kit </a>of board, sensors (accelerometer, ligth, temperature, humidity, sound...) and actuators (LED, buzzer...)</li><li>Air quality sensors</li><li>Material to build the prototypes (boxes, cables, screw, glue, tape...)</li><li>Office supplies (pen, pencil, rubber, post-it, colour pencils, scissors, stapler, markers...)</li></ul><p>In just around 10 hours (afternoon 16th and morning 17th Nov 2022), the teams designed their proposal to solve a specific problem related to urban mobility, build a first prototype to demonstrate their idea and prepared their 7-minute pitch showing their project to the audience and the jury.</p><p>1. In just around 10 hours (afternoon 16th and morning 17th Nov 2022), the teams designed their proposal to solve a specific problem related to urban mobility, build a first prototype to demonstrate their idea and prepared their 7-minute pitch showing their project to the audience and the jury.
1. The GIOTTO team proposed a Smart City Center to deal with premature deaths attributable to air pollution from vehicle emissions, through regulation of no. of cars allowed in the center depending on no. of pedestrians and air pollution observed, along with citizen alerts.
2. The Bik'O'llution team proposed a bicycle rental service aware of pollution and traffic jams to suggest quiet and clean routes to customers, to deal with sleep disorders, stress, noise and 1,300 premature deaths/year in Barcelona due to pollution.
3. The PureFlowRoad team presented a prototype pollution sensor and alarm devices installed on the bike to alert cyclists and suggest alternative routes on a city pollution map updated in real time.
4. The Light Trak team proposed a dynamic traffic light regulation based on the traffic, to reduce traffic jam and improve security, to alleviate traffic jam impact: 8 days/life spent in traffic jams and 15% C02 due to traffic jams.
5. The CrowdFree team proposed a tool to avoid crowds in public transport, suggesting alternative means of transport (e.g., location of nearby free bikes, next bus passing soon nearby...) when the metro is too full, and also gives incentives to follow the smart suggestions of their tool.
The Hackathon Jury evaluated the impact of each proposal, the technical and economical feasibilities and the prototype. It was was composed by:

There will be 10 teams of around 10 participants each, both from Barcelona and Toulouse. Participants will receive several gifts. The winning team will receive a special gift. Also, we will send a Diploma to each participant as a collaborator with the Project 4I4U.

The Hackathon was a great success. It was wonderful to see so many passionate young people developing their projects so quickly, perfectly organized in their heterogeneous teams made up of engineering students, master students, high school students along with students from a School of Fine Arts. We had 90 participants from the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) Toulouse, the Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse (ISDAT), the Lycee Polyvalent Joseph Gallieni and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC).
The students were previously organized in 8 teams, with members of the different participating institutions, and they had several proposals from the organizers on how to improve urban mobility issues in cities like Barcelona and Toulouse: Mobility at nigh, mobility and health, micromobility, impact of large events on urban mobility, urban delivery, as some examples. They had a lot of material to design, develop and implement their proposals:
- A kit of board, sensors (accelerometer, ligth, temperature, humidity, sound...) and actuators (LED, buzzer...)
- Air quality sensors

It was wonderful to see so many passionate young people developing their projects so quickly, perfectly organized in their heterogeneous teams made up of engineering students, master students, high school students along with students from a School of Fine Arts. We had 90 participants from the <strong>Institut National des Sciences Appliquées</strong> (<a href="https://www.insa-toulouse.fr/en/index.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">INSA</a>) Toulouse, the <strong>Institut Supérieur des Arts et du Design de Toulouse</strong> (<a href="https://www.isdat.fr/en/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">ISDAT</a>), the <a href="https://joseph-gallieni.mon-ent-occitanie.fr/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Lycee Polyvalent Joseph Gallieni</strong></a> and the <strong>Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya</strong> (<a href="https://www.upc.edu/en?set_language=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">UPC</a>).</p><p>The students were previously organized in 8 teams, with members of the different participating institutions, and they had several proposals from the organizers on how to improve urban mobility issues in cities like Barcelona and Toulouse: Mobility at nigh, mobility and health, micromobility, impact of large events on urban mobility, urban delivery, as some examples. They had a lot of material to design, develop and implement their proposals:</p><ul><li>A <a href="https://www.gotronic.fr/art-beginner-kit-grove-110061162-31759.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">kit </a>of board, sensors (accelerometer, ligth, temperature, humidity, sound...) and actuators (LED, buzzer...)</li><li>Air quality sensors</li><li>Material to build the prototypes (boxes, cables, screw, glue, tape...)</li><li>Office supplies (pen, pencil, rubber, post-it, colour pencils, scissors, stapler, markers...)</li></ul><p>In just around 10 hours (afternoon 16th and morning 17th Nov 2022), the teams designed their proposal to solve a specific problem related to urban mobility, build a first prototype to demonstrate their idea and prepared their 7-minute pitch showing their project to the audience and the jury.</p><p>1.
