Designing, locating and building a green solution (Lyon, France)

Avatar: EIT Community Activities EIT Community Activities
10/01/2022 22:14

The goal is to sustainably improve the quality of life of the inhabitants, users and visitors of the historic site of Vieux-Lyon, as well as the other living beings who share this territory. To turn to blue-green infrastructure aims to manage more easily water quantity and water quality.

The solutions envisaged will also be a real value-added proposition for young high school students in their future professional insertion. Indeed, it will be a major asset of real concretization of a work in co-construction with the users of the urban space and the creation of a consequent address book for these future people on the job market.

The project will take place in the 5th district of the city of Lyon (France), between September 13th and November 25th

Challenge addressed

Sustainable alternatives for hardscapes as urban spaces, naturalisation of degraded public areas, green areas, biodiversity, green and blue infrastructures, and urban furniture as assets promoting active mobility, improving citizen well-being, and mitigating heat island effects. (EIT Urban Mobility)

Solution proposed, focus area

The core activity of the project was to design a green or blue solution to mitigate the impacts of climate change through design and build a natural space to help cooling public spaces in Lyon.. . The choice was of the Place Saint-Jean as an experimentation field in Lyon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It implies not to plant on open ground, not to plan water features or to implement vegetation on the roof or the facades. That is why we focus on a mobile gardener, which has been built into the Lyon Pressin Horticultural School and then moved into the Place Saint-Jean. To be mobile implies that the gardener must have the same size than a wooden pallet (140 cm x 90 cm), which is a major constraint.

Target Groups

The target group of the activities were high-school students, end users of the experimentation field in Lyon (Place Saint-Jean)

Main activities / milestones

  • Raising awareness of environmental and climate change issues among high-school students

  • Sensitization of the citizens of the 5th district to environmental and climate change issues

  • Landscape learning of good practices taught by high school students to citizens

  • Co-construction of green and blue solutions around round tables and role plays

  • Experimental implementation of solutions with the help of agents of the city of Lyon

  • Monitoring of thermal comfort with temperature and humidity measuring devices

  • Communication & Dissemination

Partnership

Resallience by Sixense

Outcomes

A strong and efficient mobilization of the involved partners had been conducted, enabling indirect exchanges between citizens and high-school students to design and build the green solution in accordance with the citizens' expectations.

The main impact of the project for Lyon City is the fact, that the experimentations have been conducted in Lyon and the methodology deployed in this project could be replicated within the city of Lyon and in other cities too. Due to the seasonality of the project the monitoring campaign planned for spring, summer and the early autumn 2022 to assess the benefit of the green solution in terms of cooling. Two devices will be implemented: one near the gardener and one at the opposite side of the green solution, to witness the changes brought by the green solution. RESALLIENCE will then be able to quantify the difference of temperature and humidity between the two sites and the benefits in terms of cooling.
