Through a collaboration between the Madrid City Council, the Mutant Institute of Alternative Narratives (IMNA), Plataforma Motor Nave Boetticher (PNB), and the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) and within the Madrid Deep Demonstration portfolio, the project Cyborg Garden seeks to co-design NBS by using an innovative methodological approach that unites art, science, and society. The Cyborg Garden aims to naturate the outdoor spaces at the Centre of Contemporary Creation Matadero Madrid and its surrounding neighbourhoods and to collectively formulate a climate change adaptation strategy that can contribute to transform Matadero into a desirable space: a cyborg garden for trialing forms of co-existence between humans and non-humans.
Challenge addressed
This project aims to enhance citizen participation through the collaborative ideation and design of artistic prototypes of nature-based solutions to achieve climate resilience.
Solution proposed, focus area
The cyborg garden pilot within the Madrid Deep Demonstration’s portfolio has become an experimental space and a study case of urban prototypes with the aim to replicate its adaptation strategies to climate change in other areas of Madrid. In that sense, this project’s aim was to replicate the cyborg garden in some schools within the Madrid Young Innovators program, allowing artists and associations to guide school teams in the co-design of nature-based solutions for their school’s surroundings, transforming them into healthier environments and empowering students to become climate leaders.
Target Groups
The target group for this experiment was defined as young students from ages 11 to 17 years old because we believe that it is essential to increase youth participation in order to address climate change. The schools that were chosen for this experiment are based in very vulnerable neighbourhoods from the city of Madrid with the aim that these young leaders will take climate action, enhancing their connection to the territory, creating environmental awareness, closing the digital gap and improving social cohesion.

The consortium is formed by the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), the Madrid City Council, the Mutant Institute of Environmental Narratives (IMNA), and Plataforma Nave Boetticher (PNB).
Expected Results
The main results for this project were defined as follows: 1) To help students co-design NBS “minicyborg” garden prototypes, from an artistic approach to achieve climate resilience in the City of Madrid 2) To validate and analyse the impact of the project to catalyse cultural impact and behavioural change, especially among youngsters 3) To systematize materials that allow for further scalability of the project, thus generating a sustainable pedagogical model 4) To create co-creating spaces to boost collaboration between the different stakeholders involved.
