Zejtun public square (Malta)
The activity focus on the main central public space found in Zejtun, namely Misrah Girgor Bonici. The main square has been for centuries considered as the main space for the community members to meet up, to socialize, to do daily errands and participate in NGOs and practice the active citizenship aspect of the locality. With the Parish Church right in the middle of the space, and surrounding properties encircling the Church, the area is an intrinsic part of the traditional historical and cultural heritage of Zejtun.
Challenge addressed
This project enhance citizen participation through a citizen engagement tool for co-design and planning of public space offering real-life transition experiments in urban streets in combination with alternative mobility concepts
Solution proposed, focus area
In line with the Zejtun Slow Streets strategy, the project start public consultation and involve residents and commuters to design and implement a Play street on December13th Square and Misrah Gregorio Bonici Street in Zejtun
Target Groups
The target group for this experiment was defined as children from ages 5 to 11 years old because we believe that children are considered as an important stakeholder in the engagement and co-design process of our initiative. Another important stakeholder to be consulted is the commercial sector present in the space, including bars and cafeterias, clubs, and other business outlets.
Main activities / milestones
- To inform and deploy 1200 people to respond either online or physically on the stands
- To enhance diversity and reach out to varied individuals with different ages, gender, and lifestyles as much as possible
- To evaluate the preferences and opinions about having less cars and more pedestrianization in the designated area
- To enhance any alternative mobility options instead of car use
- To assist the people in being proactive by putting forward their opinions towards more informed decision making.
Partnership
The consortium is formed by the Zejtun Local Council, Malta, and ModelMe3D B.V.
Outcomes
The activities promoted health and neighbourliness in the public area, through Play Streets. Through the digital ModelMe3D Co-Design Tool, two-way communication between the residents and the Local Council had been fostered including local stakeholders.
