From 2020 the Municipality of Barcelona has set the project “Protegim les escoles” as a high priority strategy to provide Barcelona’s schools with safe, comfortable, and healthy public spaces, that act as meeting places for children, their families and neighbours. By 2030, it is expected that all the 585 schools in Barcelona will offer safe and comfortable surroundings. In line with this, FURNISH emerges as an opportunity to help in this pacification, but going beyond. The project objective is to provide interesting and instigating interactive prototypes to stimulate permanence in these areas. These places have the potential to work as transitional spaces, connecting the urban and school environments in a creative way, promoting longer stays before and after school hours, and enabling its use as extensions of classrooms and playgrounds, engaging children to play, be active and learn.
Challenge addressed
This project aims to improve cohesion in the public realm through new urban designed elements resulting from a co-creation process with schooling environments involving several stakeholders. The urban elements are prototypes specifically designed and constructed within the project, that are implemented in the public space and tested to ensure their replicability.
Solution proposed, focus area
Two mobile urban elements are placed in two sites in front of schools:
- Entença School in the district of Eixample; public kindergarten and primary school
- Antoni Brusí School, in the district of Sant Martí; public kindergarten and primary school
Concerning the prototypes, affordability and replicability are key aspects to stimulate other places to take an active role and to change their urban spaces, creating better cities for children. Citizen’s engagement is a core goal of the project thanks to its focus on the Urban Living Lab (ULL) process and methodology.
Target Groups
The main target groups are children, parents and teachers of Barcelona’s schools. Besides the direct benefits for children, these spaces designed by FURNISH also can create community networks between parents and people that live nearby, promoting social interaction in all age groups.
Main activities / milestones
The project “Protegim les escoles” is transforming the surrounding streets of the two aforementioned schools in a pacified area and FURNISH complements it with the promotion of places to stay and play in around 25m². FURNISH is implement two prototypes that will be tested by the school community during at least two weeks. Their implementation integrates the engagement of the school community in the decision-making process.
Partnership
This project is led by CARNET, future mobility research hub, together with Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and University School of Design and Engineering of Barcelona.
Outcomes
Two mobile urban elements was be placed in two sites in front of schools. In both situations, new urban spaces were promoted, creating possibilities for school activities to expand to the outdoor public environment. The prototypes were successfully tested by citizens (especially children).
