About this process
This process belongs to Training programmes
Tandem Women in Cycling is a train-the-trainer programme for women who want to empower other women to cycle. Online courses and an in-person training are followed by a collaborative two-month period where participants pilot several sessions of a women’s cycling programme with support from a network of peers and mentors. This training gives participants a chance to meet other civic-minded women from across the EU, while simultaneously having a chance to engage with their community through the joy of cycling.
Why was this programme created?
We believe in the power of bicycling - not only as a healthy and sustainable mode of transportation, but also as a symbol of freedom and safe and inclusive communities! At the same time, we’ve heard from many women who have told us that they don’t know how to ride a bicycle or that they want to bicycle more but they don’t feel comfortable cycling in urban environments.
EIT Urban Mobility and BYCS developed this program because we also believe there are many women out there who are strong community advocates and are interested in building the next generation of women who ride the city.
What does the course consist of?
The course consists in approximately 25 hours of training spread out over 3 online (video) sessions and one weekend-long in-person training in Brussels. Following the course, we support the participants to implement their own cycling training sessions to help more women in their city to gain confidence in bicycling.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for women in towns and cities across the EU who have a passion and enthusiasm for cycling and want to have a positive impact on their local community! As part of this program, they’ll also lead several sessions to help other women become more confident cyclists - thus, connections to local groups, communities or organisations who can help them in this mission are a plus.
This is a course for beginners, so we're looking for women who are not already actively doing this work but are looking for support to get started!
When is the programme offered?
The cohort (~10 participants) will meet online as a full group on three evenings from 6 - 8 PM (CET). They will also join a weekend field trip in Brussels to meet the other participants and experience local cycling initiatives up close.
In between the sessions, participants are asked to conduct post and prep work, assignments, and other activities to prepare to conduct at least four cycling training sessions in their own community.
The programme was first offered in August 2022 and again in March 2023. Applications for the 2024 edition are now open! Apply from Feb 19th to March 17th!
You can find more information about the programme and the opportunities it created in this interview in the BYCS Perspectives magazine and also in this EIT Urban Mobility Impact Story.
